Wayne Arendse named in the top 3 defenders of the CAF Champions League
Mamelodi Sundowns’ Wayne Arendse has been named as one of the top three defenders of the CAF Champions League group stages.
The 31-year-old has been a key player for coach Pitso Mosimane over the past 12 months as the current PSL champions go in search of continental glory.
The Brazilians’ impressive run in the Champions League saw Masandawana top Group B in the group stages and secure a place in the semi-finals.
Sundowns will face ZESCO United in a two-legged semi-final which will take place on 17 and 24 September respectively.
The team’s success was an incredible team effort under the mentorship of Mosimane, where Arsende formed, arguably, the best defensive partnership in the competition with Thabo Nthethe.
CAF have since named Arsende as one of the top three defenders on their official Twitter account, alongside Amine Attouchi of Wydad Casablanca and Al Ahly’s Ramy Rabia.
The player’s representative, Ashley Rasool of Lion Sports Management, says that the recognition comes as no surprise.
“The nomination is of no surprise to us at Lion Sports and Wayne’s latest accolade is fully deserved given his dominant role in the club’s recent successes. At 31, he’s the stellar central defender in the PSL and this nomination affirms our view.
“He’s firmly focused on winning the Champion’s League with Sundowns as he enters the final season of his contract. We’ll sit down with Wayne at a later stage to discuss options post the current 2016/17 season. It’s exciting times for a thoroughbred professional and absolute gentleman,” said Rasool.
Arendse is in the last year of his contract with the club, and is being monitored by several clubs with a view of possibly landing him on a free next year.
